Games we Played
As reported by the Blond Sheep
Hi Everyone,

Last night was board games night at Mega Games Penrith. Thanks to all those who came along. This is my review of the games I played last night.

Acquire
This game can be compared to Monopoly as it has the similar mechanics of buying, selling and trading stock in companies. I prefer Acquire though as I find it simpler to play. The aim of the game is to have the most money at the end of the game. To do this you need to place numbered tiles on the board. Once at least 2 tiles are joined then this starts a hotel. At this point you can start buying stock options in the hotel. If you then place more tiles joining to the hotel then this hotel expands making it worth more money.

Once you start getting multiple hotels on the board you can place tiles that merge 2 hotels into one. Once this occurs the larger hotel ACQUIRES the smaller one and anyone with stock options in the smaller hotel gets paid out according to the current stock value.

The game continues in this way until you have 1 hotel with 41 or more tiles in it or you have all the hotels on the board with 11 or more tiles in each. At this point you do the end scoring and find out the winner.

We played this for the 1st time last night and found out quite quickly different strategies that can be used to help you in the quest for more money. This game would take approx 1 - 1 1/2 hours to play and is a good strategic game.

Ligretto Dice
I would classify this game as a "Filler" game. This would be good to play on a night where you plan to play two lengthier games such as "ACQUIRE" and "SETTLERS OF CATAN" and you want to play a short game in between.

In this game there is a small board with dice in various colours pictured on it. There are multiple columns with 6 dice in each column. Each player then selects 6 dice at random out of a bag (The dice are in multiple colours as per the colours on the board).

All players then roll their dice simultaneously and try to put all their dice on the board before anyone else. You must put the dice on the board in order from 1 to 6. With everyone trying to do this at the same time it can get frantic and very fun. When one person is able to do this that person yells out "Ligretto Stop" and then the scoring phase starts. You play 3 rounds per person playing. Last night we had 4 people playing so 12 rounds were played.

In total the 12 rounds took approx 20 - 30 minutes to complete. I thought this was a good game as it was simple, quick and required no thinking. It was just a fun game to fill in some downtime.

Dragon Parade
I would consider this a good "Filler" game as well. The aim of the game is to have one of your playing pieces as close to the dragon as possible at the end. The closer you are the more points you get.

To move the dragon each player is given 6 cards which are either RED or YELLOW in colour with various values on each. When you play a card you move the dragon either left or right, depending on the colour of the card, the number of spaces indicated. You then place 1 of your playing pieces anywhere on the board. You place your piece wherever you think the dragon will end up at the end of the game.

You do this for a total of 4 cards each. At this stage you compare where the dragon is compared to where your pieces are. The closer you are to the dragon the more points you get.

We played 4 rounds of this last night and in total took approx 20 minutes to play. This is a good game to just have fun with. Very simple rules.

Blokus
This is a strategic tile placing game. You can have up to 4 players and each player has different colour tiles. The aim of the game is to play the most number of tiles as you can compared to other players.

You place the tiles on the board in such a way that when you are touching your own pieces they can only touch corner to corner but they can be placed adjacent to any other colour if you choose. At the start of the game it is straight forward with not many pieces on the board. Once you get a lot of pieces on the board though it gets quite tricky and you have to think carefully on where your next move is because it could be your last.

If you are playing with diabolical people you get could get blocked quite quickly and end up a spectator quite early.

I have found this to be a good game to play with my autistic son. We started playing with 1 colour only jut to get used to correct tile placement. We are using 2-3 colours now and he has grasped the concept of correct placement with multiple colours being used. The next step is to show him the importance of using larger pieces at the start to try and help you towards the end of the game as well as how to get out of situations where you think you are blocked.

Thanks again to all those who attended last night's activities and see you all in 2 weeks time.
